Starting in the 19th century, shopping helped save lives. Advertisers at the time sold countless home and personal hygiene products by zeroing in on the public’s newfound enemy: germs. But by making money off of this fear of germs, advertisers inadvertently made the public healthier, made cities more sanitary, and created cultural shifts in personal hygiene that we still see today.
