Howard Beach anti-racism rally after 1986 Michael Griffith death – Daily Mail

Late on the evening of December 20, 1986, 24-year-old Dominick Blum (below left) accidentally struck a 23-year-old black man named Michael Griffith (above right) with his vehicle in the Queens borough of New York City, and became ensnarled in what would become a racial storm that tore apart New York City and generate anti-American headlines around the world about racism in the United States. The incident came after a mob of young white men in Howard Beach attacked three black men whose car had broken down in the area. Griffith died, another man, Cedric Sandiford was seriously beaten with baseball bats and tree branches; and third, Timothy Grimes, escaped with minor injuries. The incident led to manslaughter convictions for three young white men – their leader a British teen named Jon Lester (above right) – who went on to serve years-long prison sentences. Blum was cleared by a grand jury in May 1987.
