Liberal Democrat Jane Dodds speaks after winning Brecon by-election

Boris Johnson suffered the first major setback of his infant premiership today as his Commons’ majority was reduced to just one after the Tories lost the Brecon and Radnorshire by-election. The Liberal Democrats’ Jane Dodds (centre, with MP Ed Davey) gave the Prime Minister a political headache as she overcame an 8,000-vote Conservative majority to take the Welsh seat for the Remainer party. Disgraced expenses cheat Tory Chris Davies, whose conviction and expulsion via a recall petition forced the summer vote, held on to second (left) with a better than expected showing despite the presence of the Brexit Party. The vote shows the job Mr Johnson (bottom right) still has to do with 90 days to go until Britain is due to leave the EU, as the Brexit Party and Tory vote combined would have been enough to win the seat (top right). Ms Dodds, 55, who won with a majority of 1,425 after a ‘Remain alliance’ pact, said the result was ‘sending a message to Westminster that we demand better’. She said her first act as an MP would be to find the Prime Minister and tell him to rule out a no-deal Brexit.
