On The Listening Post this week: For a moment, China saw public anger and real news reporting about the coronavirus go uncensored. How come? Plus, the sound and fury of India’s news anchors.

Speaking up about the coronavirus – but at what cost?
The death of Li Wenliang, a doctor in Wuhan, the Chinese city at the epicentre of the coronavirus outbreak, has caused collective outrage online.

Li was amongst the first to raise the alarm. He was then taken into custody and forced to confess to wrongdoing – spreading rumours – essentially for doing his job.

It is rare for the Chinese to openly criticise the government; rarer still when those criticisms on social media are not instantly deleted by censors.

And for Chinese journalists, there was a temporary window that opened for some hard-hitting investigative reporting. It appears that that window has since been closed – replaced by what Beijing calls “managed transparency”.

On our radar:

Richard Gizbert speaks to Filipina journalist Maria Ressa, head of the news website Rappler, about President Rodrigo Duterte’s move to shut down ABS-CBN, the country’s leading broadcaster.

Arnab Goswami and the newsification of hate in India
Over the past decade, Indians have witnessed the rise of a new breed of news anchor: brash, aggressive, unapologetically nationalistic.

They trade in conflict, fear and spectacle – it is a formula that tends to pay off in the ratings and online.

The Listening Post’s Meenakshi Ravi looks closely at a prime practitioner of this news style: Arnab Goswami of Republic TV.

  1. They removed the Plandemic video because it speaks the truth and they don't want anyone to know this was a virus they deliberately released it was to kill millions .the head of the CDC is part of it .I think it's gross that YouTube is now helping to hide the real story .

  2. CGTN liu xin. I LOOK UP ON YOU TUBE THERE ARE NO 2 MILLION THUMBS UP. THAT IS HECK OF A LIE IF YOU POST ON YOU TUBE YES IT WILL GET 2 MILLION THUMBS but NOT UP BUT THUMBS DOWN. JUST TELL TH TRUTH IF YOU ARE JOURNALS OTHER WILES DON'T BE A REPORTER OR BE A REPORTER AT SOMEWHERE ELSE THAT YOU COULD REPORT MOST TRUE AND VITAL TRUTH CAUSE UR FALSE REPORTING COULD HURT THE WORLD NOT JUST YOUR COUNTRY CHINA. YOU WILL HAVE A BAD DREAMS AND NIGHTMARE CAUSE ALL THE LOST SOUL WILL HUNT YOU

  3. Or how unapologetic cnn , msnbc, abc, vox are aboit their total backing of anyone in the Democratic party theyre all shilling for the democrats in america besides fox and thays why fox has the highest rates higher than all put together ! Hahaha fox is where u go if u want real news cnn is where u go if u want liberal brain washing theyre horrific.

  4. The sad thing is that after all these people have died nothing will be done against the Chinese government. Alle people around the world will just accept it like that. I don´t see that there will be any consequences. European newspapers don´t even report about this and we are supposedley informed about the truth.

  5. The majority of High end products sold by China is made by thousands of individuals in ‘forced concentration camps’. These camps are not educational facilities but forced ‘brain washing’ facilities to take away the God given rights of human beings of ‘freedom of choice and religion.’ When we purchase their products we give them more power…boycott by not purchasing their products and take away their power. The more ‘groveling’ we do to satisfy them, the more power we give and the more freedom they take.

  6. About Arnab, First i'm indian. And i'm not biased towards any indian parties but i have been watching republic for over a period and i can say, it doesn't' look good here in this report. But the reality is media now days playing a big role in India over a reality of "need for a positive change"

  7. I think this has been uncovered already. the virus was first discovered only a few blocks from the only level 4 Virology lab in China.
(The Wuhan Institute of Virology) It was convenient to blame it on the close by wet market and bats, However the closest bats to that wet market were 6oo miles away.
Its highly unlikely there selling those in that wet market. ??? this is just common sense people ! the creation of this virus was not an accident. It was created in China's lab, and got out !

  8. The world has got to hold China responsible for every life lost & every government in every nation on earth should make China pay for every dollar they have to spend to fight this threat

  9. abs-cbn and rappler are bias media in the philippines. they always make fake news against the president specially his war on drugs. they don't make fair and true news. they even never broadcast DU30's ads in the mids of election even though its already paid by DU30, swindler indeed. the worst instead of DU30 election ads they made a black propaganda ads against him which quite true activist. what they did to DU30 is what they done wayback on Marcus times. they manipulated people in manila resulted to people power to overthrow Marcus government. right now many of us don't trust this bias media coz they make trash news. that's why they got a good prize from their wrong doings..

  10. Its of primary inportance to speak out over the secretive nature of the chinese about how they lied and continues to do so . The nations of the world should collectively work to bring the chinese befor the law

  11. The people of China are the slaves of their government, it the Government's fault for what has happened lots of Chinese people tried to speak up about what was going on, The CCP blocked everything from talking blocked thier social media accounts and now shut off the phone accounts, i hope the Chinese people rise up against the ccp and become free people truly free.

  12. We are satisfied with the DUTERTE administration as a regular citizen I see it with my bare eyes! Do not twist the story MARIA RESSA! Media in the PHILIPPINES is bias like that lady doing.
